Pre-Set Test 8 Phase 1 Partly Trained T Junctions Emerging

PST No.8 Exercises 9P and 11T

The DSA SE (Supervising Examiner) will call your learner a partly trained student for this Pre Set Test lesson briefing. Listen to the word picture given to you by the SE and take notes if you like.

The lesson recap will start as you complete Phase 1For this PST the following areas will need to be covered in your lesson briefing:

You'll start this Pre Set Test from wherever the phase 1 lesson ended. Your learner is now a completely different human being to the one you taught on phase 1. Any errors you fixed in phase 1 may reappear on phase 2. Don't make the error of thinking that you fixed those errors earlier, so they won't happen again.

You now begin this PST from wherever the phase 1 lesson ended. Your learner driver is now a completely different human being so don’t linger on the phase 1 faults or person, they have left.

For this PST, these areas need to be covered:

  • briefing on T-Junctions
  • mirror, signal, manoeuvre
  • speed
  • gears
  • coasting
  • observation
  • emerging
  • position right
  • position left
  • pedestrians

Faults which the SE may throw at you, remember don’t get snow balled

Faults that may occur

  • faults in MSPSL - missed mirror checks missed, no signal
  • driving up to the junction too fast
  • emerging in the wrong gear
  • emerging without looking both ways
  • crossing the path of other vehicles unsafely
  • failing to stop at a stop sign
  • failing to give way
  • poor positioning for the turn
  • approaching to quickly
  • coasting
  • wrong gear, signalling wrong way

The above faults may be used, as well as many others which you may never have seen before and probably never will see used by a learner driver, so be prepared. Use the following fault analysis check list.

Fault Analysis

  1. Identify Fault- Say It
  2. What or Where Should?
  3. Why Should?
  4. When to Do/How To Do/How To Judge
  5. So Next Time?
  6. Prompt or Guide Next Attempt
  7. Praise When Done/Be Specific

Don’t forget your structure for the briefing

  • Recap
  • Lesson Objective
  • Lesson Breifing
  • Debrief

Make sure you cover all the main points and keep to the structure, don’t miss anything out, is you do cover it in the Debrief at the end.

You will be expected to maintain control of the lesson, be patient and tactful and give encouragement to the ‘pupil’ at all times. What is assessed is the relevance of the instruction for the ability of the pupil and to the particular conditions on the road on the day of the test.

Blue Instructor Training will provide the most appropriate and up to date training to help you prepare the Part 3 examination
