PST 4 Phase 1 Partly Trained Reversing

PST No.4 Exercises 3P and 9T

After the word picture from the SE, you will go straight into the recap. Don’t forget this is now your time to take control and watch everything the SE is doing, especially when they go to move off, a prime time to throw a fault your way. The SE can ask you to teach them the reverse exercise to the left or to the right, so you need reference points for both ways

This level of student will have covered these areas before, so you don’t need to teach just, remind them of hopefully what they already know.

For this PST, the relevant areas are

  • briefing on reversing
  • co-ordination of the controls
  • observation
  • accuracy

You will need to try to cover these areas in the briefing or on the move, but don't get hung up if any particular skill isn't mentioned or tested

SE faults which may be thrown at you.

  • a range of learner driver errors 'en route' to the manoeuvre area
  • not starting the manoeuvre from the correct position - car too close to the kerb
  • not carrying out proper observations before moving away to do the reverse exercise
  • not looking to the rear before the car starts to move backwards
  • trying to do the manoeuvre too quickly
  • steering too slowly / too quickly
  • lack of co-ordination of the foot pedals
  • rolling back / forwards, out of control, through road camber or inclines
  • failing to achieve at least some accuracy - note: accuracy is not as important as observation and control
  • not giving way to oncoming traffic or pedestrians.
  • waving people through.

The above faults may be used, as well as many others which you may never have seen before and probably never will see used by a learner driver, so be prepared. Use the following fault analysis check list.

Fault Analysis

  1. Identify Fault- Say It
  2. What or Where Should?
  3. Why Should?
  4. When to Do/How To Do/How To Judge
  5. So Next Time?
  6. Prompt or Guide Next Attempt
  7. Praise When Done/Be Specific

Don’t forget your structure for the briefing

  • Recap
  • Lesson Objective
  • Lesson Briefing
  • Debrief

Make sure you cover all the main points and keep to the structure, don’t miss anything out, is you do cover it in the Debrief at the end.
