PST 3 Phase 1 Approaching Junctions to Turn Either Left or Right

PST No.3 Exercises 4P and 7T

After the word picture from the SE, you will go straight into the recap. Don’t forget this is now a different student, at a different level of ability, so the SE should be able to change roles effectively, and portray this.

This level of student will have covered these areas before, so you don’t need to teach just remind them of hopefully what they already know.

For this PST, the relevant areas are:

  • mirror
  • signal
  • brakes
  • gears
  • coasting
  • too fast on approach
  • too slow on approach
  • position
  • pedestrians
  • cross approaching traffic
  • right corner cut

You will need to try to cover these areas in your briefing or on the move, don't get distracted by the SE if they start asking irrelevant questions not pertaining to the subject matter. Take control and be assertive, don’t be flustered if you don’t know the answer then don’t make one up, tell then we will cover that in a minute.

If the SE commits a serious fault then don’t hesitate, make every to pull them over, and quickly deal with it, if you hesitate your doomed.

Some SE faults you may get

  • MSPSL - out of sequence, mirror checks missed, no signal
  • approaching junctions too quickly
  • turning in the wrong gear
  • attempting to cross the path of other vehicles unsafely
  • incorrect positioning for the turn
  • coasting
  • bad positioning
  • not reacting to your prompts

The above faults may be used, as well as many others which you may never have seen before and probably never will see used by a learner driver, so be prepared. Use the following fault analysis check list.

Fault Analysis

  1. Identify Fault- Say It
  2. What or Where Should?
  3. Why Should?
  4. When to Do/How To Do/How To Judge
  5. So Next Time?
  6. Prompt or Guide Next Attempt
  7. Praise When Done/Be Specific

Don’t forget your structure for the briefing

  • Recap
  • Lesson Objective
  • Lesson Briefing
  • Debrief

Make sure you cover all the main points and keep to the structure, don’t miss anything out, is you do cover it in the Debrief at the end.
