PST No.2 Exercises 2B and 11T
The DSA will call your learner a beginner for this Pre Set Test.
This PST is broken down into two very different parts, moving off and stopping, both need separate briefings. It’s easy to get going and then forget about the making normal stops. So cover this after the first normal stop, otherwise it’s all too much at once.
From the test centre the student is yours, take control and don’t forget you are in total control, demonstrate the required technique for moving off from the side of the road. You can perform a very simple talk through of what you are doing, and ask if they have done their theory, play the part.
Your briefing must cover the following areas
- briefing on moving off and stopping
- mirrors, vision and use
- mirrors, direction, overtaking and stopping
- mirror, signal and manoeuvre
- precautions before moving off
- co-ordination of controls
- normal stop position
- normal stop control
The SE errors would include
- bad use of clutch and gas pedal- setting off to quickly!
- walking around the wrong side of the car to enter
- using the wrong feet on the wrong pedals
- errors in MSPSL - out of sequence, mirror checks missed - especially when stopping
- signalling to move off dangerously - signalling to move off is almost always unnecessary
- careering off course and towards obstructions
- moving off in the wrong gear
- moving off without taking effective observations
- moving off with the hand brake still on
- poor gear changing
- stalling through lifting the clutch too quickly or applying too little gas
- acting clumsy
The above faults may be used, as well as many others which you may never have seen before and probably never will see used by a learner driver, so be prepared. Use the following fault analysis check list.
Fault Analysis
- Identify Fault- Say It
- What or Where Should?
- Why Should?
- When to Do/How To Do/How To Judge
- So Next Time?
- Prompt or Guide Next Attempt
- Praise When Done/Be Specific
Don’t forget your structure for the briefing
- Recap
- Lesson Objective
- Lesson Briefing
- Debrief
Make sure you cover all the main points and keep to the structure, don’t miss anything out, is you do cover it in the Debrief at the end.
