Pre-Set Test 10 Phase 1 Part 3 Test of Instructional Ability

PST 2 Phase 2 - Meet, Cross, Overtake, Adequate Clearance and Anticipation

PST No.10 Exercises 11P and 8T

The DSA SE (Supervising Examiner) will call your learner a partly trained student for this Pre Set Test lesson briefing. Listen to the word picture given to you by the SE and take notes if you like.

The lesson recap will start as the SE completes his word picture, for this PST the following areas will need to be covered in your lesson briefing:

For this PST you must present a briefing on the following area’s

  • mirror, signal, manoeuvre
  • meet approaching traffic
  • cross approaching traffic
  • overtake other traffic
  • keep a safe distance
  • shaving other vehicles
  • anticipation of pedestrians
  • anticipation of cyclists
  • anticipation of drivers

Please see below some typical faults that may be thrown at you.

  • errors in MSPSL - out of sequence, mirror checks missed, no signal etc etc
  • driving up to hazards too quickly
  • positioning the vehicle incorrectly for turning, emerging, meeting, stopping
  • inappropriate use of speed
  • driving too slowly
  • undue hesitancy at junctions

The above faults may be used, as well as many others which you may never have seen before and probably never will see used by a learner driver, so be prepared. Use the following fault analysis check list.

Fault Analysis

  1. Identify Fault- Say It
  2. What or Where Should?
  3. Why Should?
  4. When to Do/How To Do/How To Judge
  5. So Next Time?
  6. Prompt or Guide Next Attempt
  7. Praise When Done/Be Specific

Don’t forget your structure for the briefing

  • Recap
  • Lesson Objective
  • Lesson Breifing
  • Debrief

Make sure you cover all the main points and keep to the structure, don’t miss anything out, is you do cover it in the Debrief at the end.

You will be expected to maintain control of the lesson, be patient and tactful and give encouragement to the ‘pupil’ at all times. What is assessed is the relevance of the instruction for the ability of the pupil and to the particular conditions on the road on the day of the test.

Blue Instructor Training will provide the most appropriate and up to date training to help you prepare the Part 3 examination
